elderly patients: What welfare programs are available (for elderly patients on Medicare) that will help pay for dentures?
My mom is a senior citizen on Medicare. She has been told that she will need extractions and dentures, which Medicare does not cover. Does anyone know what other goverment subsidized programs are out there to help her? I know these can be very expensive and she just cannot afford them otherwise. Please help! We live in Dallas, TX area!

The following is the answer: (Hint: The correct answer provided by the users, does not guarantee the right.)

Answer by Flower
Medicaid in most states stopped covering dental services but you should check with your county social services to see if their Medicaid will cover dentures. The choices are to find a dentist who takes payment arrangements; to find a dental school and get work done by a student which will cost less than private dentist; to find a community or non-profit health clinic that offers dental services based on her income.

Answer by Sweetn
There is no government subsidized program that pays for dentures. Try an online search for a dental plan. They are usually pretty cheap at $ 10-$ 20 per month and cover things like dentures and extractions.

Also, some community Health Clinics have dental services, however, your mom is not likely to be eligible because she does have some form of insurance.

Finally, you may want to see if she wants to join a Medicare Advantage plan, some of them offer dental services, just search www.medicare.gov. However, you’d have to wait till open enrollment in October to make the change.

Thank you! This blog is about [geriatric nursing|nursing home|nursing elderly].

elderly patients: Does anyone know if Aricept causes nightmares in elderly patients?
My aunt is 94 and recently started taking Aricept. She is experiencing vivid nightmares and having trouble distinguishing between reality and the nightmare–any one have any idea if the med could cause this?

The following is the answer: (Hint: The reader is not the correct identification.)

Answer by perfectlybaked
A lot of meds do that… However, maybe an onset of dementia is coincidentally coinciding with her regimen of Aricept.

Answer by ditzi_k
yes, it can. this is a typical side effect in many medications. age does play a major factor in the extensiveness of the side effects also. you may want to talk to her doctor.

Answer by CrG
My experience with Aricept was neutral mentally. No bad dreams. However it did cause a decrease in my platelet blood count.

Answer by bettyboop
It seems like my mother does have vivid dreams and nightmares also. Yes, she does take aricept. My mom takes a benadryl at night also, to help her allergies, which also helps her sleep better. When she doesn’t take the benadryl, she either can’t sleep, or she has dreams/nightmares which make her wake up….

Answer by Christina C
Yes it does most doc’s recommend taking it in the am. My grandma had the same issue! Please have them take it in the am!

I had an appointment to meet someone on Central Park West and 66th Street (essentially across the street from the famous "Tavern on the Green" restaurant), and — as usual — arrived half an hour early. So I sat on a park bench, and watched a wide spectrum of humanity walk, stroll, and ride past me. Tourists, students, babysitters, friends, lovers, bicycle-powered messengers, retired people, and joggers moved past me, usually paying no attention to me at all…

I had my camera on my lap, pointed more-or-less straight ahead, with the zoom set to an 18mm wide-angle setting. With a couple of exceptions (including this photo), I didn’t bother aiming, focusing, or even raising the camera to my eye; if the picture looked like it might be interesting, I just pressed the shutter button at the appropriate moment.

I took three or four pictures of this man as he navigated slowly across 66th Street on Central Park West (just behind where this picture was taken), stopping every few feet to catch his breath. When he reached a tree that’s just out of sight on the right side of this picture, he decided to put his arm out and rest a while longer; you can see that in the previous picture of this sequence …

Seeing his condition, a very nice couple approached him and asked if they could help walk him to the bus-stop, which was about twenty feet further ahead (indeed, you can see the approaching bus in the background). They helped him onto the bus, and then walked away…

And, yes, I did notice the reaction of the woman on the left side of the picture: I felt that she was demonstrating the reaction that all of us would have felt if we were there, in person, to witness this little vignette of humanity…

*********************

Note: on Oct 3, 2009 I made some minor edits to this photo. Primarily, I decreased the extent of shadows in the coat worn by the woman on the left, so you could see more details. There were a few other "hot spots" and "cold spots" throughout the photo that I was able to adjust, too. And I made a modest increase in the color saturation of the faces of all four individuals, as well as increasing the vibrancy of non-skin-tone colors. I do think it helps to be able to see more details of the woman’s dark raincoat, but aside from that, none of these "tweaks" are particularly germane to the main emphasis of the photo…

old people home: what punishment will the dude get who kiled 8 old people in a home?
this happened in north carolina, and if my guess is right: THE DEATH PENALTY WILL BE PURSUED WITH THiS EVIL MAN! DOES HE DESERVE DEATH? why on earth would someone want to kill old people in a retirement home? to get back at his wife?

The answer in the following: (Hint: The reader is not the correct identification.)

Answer by chuck_junior
He’s already dead. 1 shot by a Police Officer.

“The shooting spree was ended by 25-year-old Officer Justin Garner, who entered the nursing home alone as he responded to a 911 call. McKenzie said Garner, a training officer with more than four years on the Carthage force and a past winner of the department’s officer of the year award, knew he was headed into a perilous situation, but didn’t wait for back-up or a SWAT team to arrive.

“If that’s not heroism, I don’t know what is,” McKenzie said

“He had to go to all the way through the facility to encounter this individual,” McKenzie said. “It would be hard for me to believe he didn’t (hear gunfire).”

Stewart wounded Garner three times in the leg as they traded gunfire in a hallway of the 110-bed facility, McKenzie said. The single shot Garner fired from his .40-caliber service pistol hit Stewart in the chest.”

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/nursing_home_shooting

Answer by Sahand H
If he was alive, the death penalty would be suitable.

Answer by Bethenny
That was absolutely horrible. The gunman, Robert Stewart, faces eight counts of first-degree murder and one count of felony assault on a police officer, and other charges are pending. It’s too soon to tell what sentence he will be facing. No motive has been released at this time.

Give your answer to this question below!

Question: What could be an ideal gift for people in old age home on new year eve ?
Some of us thought of starting this new year by spending some time with the people living in an old age home and by giving some gifts to them.We are confused of which gifts would best suit them ? We’ve talked to one of the home’s authorities and they said they have books and clothes with them.
So any suggestions on this ?
Sweaters is one choice that we have.

The following is the answer: (Hint: The reader is not the correct identification.)

Answer by drgoodhi
beer

Answer by hellanbach
very soft lollies would be nice.

Answer by ladynamedjane
DECORATIONS FOR THEIR ROOM, PINS FOR THEIR DRESSES, CANDY, STUFFED ANIMALS, THROWS, LOTION,

Answer by veevintage
Vintage music… an old record player and some records… or cd’s!! Old stuff, from the 60′s and back. They will LOVE you for that! (Voice of experience! )

Answer by Reva P
The best gift that you can give to anyone in such a condition is your own time and continued interest, freely given.

AKA, keep visiting. Far too often people in old age homes are pretty much forgotten and ignored by their own family members. Showing an interest by making a commitment to visit on a regular basis is the very best gift.

Hi,I did the following:In the blog: geriatric nursing.

| Helping Elderly People Stay Independent
It can be difficult when an older loved one starts showing signs of deteriorating; however there are a few things you can do if you’re dedicated to supporting independence.
For example, you can have a look around their house and think about the appliances and aids you could provide them with to make day-to-day activities easier. Things we take for granted, such as using the bathroom or getting in and out of the shower can be difficult for your elderly loved one, so it’s important you provide them with the tools to do so with dignity.
Another idea is to provide them with small, folding tables that they can eat their food on. These allow them to sit in their favourite chair during breakfast, lunch and dinner, without having to grapple with complicated or fiddly lap trays.
Technology is another great way to help your loved one remain independent. By teaching them a few basics about how to use a computer, you can show them how to find support groups online, play old-time games they thought had long gone out of fashion (such as chequers and chess) or even connect with their children, grandchildren, nephews and nieces on social networking sites.
Furthermore, if you connect with them via Skype, they can rest assured they can see you face-to-face (virtually) every day. This is ideal if you live more than 10 or 15 minutes away, or don’t have enough time to visit them every day.
However if you’ve taken all of this advice and your loved one is still struggling, you could also consider home care services. Qualified carers can visit your loved ones’ house and help them with daily activities.
By being cared for within their own surroundings, elderly people can still feel dignified and independent, without the threat of feeling institutionalised – which many do when asked or forced to move into a residential care home or sheltered housing.

Carewatch, the UKs leading provider of care and support offers help at home health care services to thousands of people in order to support independent living. We offer elderly support and special care for the elderly to help support their independence in their own homes.

geriatric nurse: How to become a geriatric nurse?
My high school career adviser didn’t help all that much, I would like to become a geriatric nurse in the future, she advice me that first I have to get my bachelors of science in nursing then a masters in gerontology, is this what you have to get to become a geriatric nurse? I would like to work in a hospital more than a home. Thanks bunches!!

The following is the answer: (Hint: For answers, no site audit.)

Answer by Starzzzy again
Find a school that matches YOUR interest specifically. It’s important that the school offers the programs you are looking for.

Answer by ray
Totally wrong. You have 2 options to began with (LPN: Licensed Practical Nurse or RN: Registered Nurse). In my opinion, the RN is the only way to go. As an RN, you are trained and qualified to function more independently and have a lot more skills/knowledge base taught. With this comes way more pay but also way more responsibility. You do not have to have a masters degree. Truthfully, you can do any type of bedside nursing with a 2 year Associate Degree from an accredited Junior College. It usually ends up being a 3 year course by the time you get your pre-reqs out of the way and get accepted into the program. When you 1st get out of school and practice as a nurse, you usually will have to do at least 1 year on a Medical Surgical unit which usually has a great number of geriatric pts. The one great thing about nursing is that you have so many options as to whatspecialtyy you can practice in. It’s like changing a career without having to get another degree to do. I only have an Associate Degree in Nursing as an RN and I have did Telemetry, ER staff nurse, Director of ER, Endoscopy, Hyperbariacs, and House Supervisor.

by pennstatelive

The following not about geriatric nurse,But funny：A bad beginning makes a bad ending.A friend without faults will never be found. One meets its destiny on the road he takes to avoid it..When alive ,we may probably offend some people. However, we must think about whether they are deserved offended。！Remind of festial: World Run Day 11/11.

geriatric nurse: I would like to do an online geriatric nurse practitioner program are any out there?

The answer in the following: (Hint: For answers, no site audit.)

Answer by obscurity
Are you already an RN? If so, I’m sure you probably know that an online NP program (a legitimate one, that is), doesn’t exist. You can do some courses online, but you are going to have to attend some classes in person.

Answer by Señor Sñarky
The world doesn’t need any online geriatric nurse practitioners. We need NP’s who have actually worked with the elderly in person and know what they’re doing.

The following are not relevant to the content of some geriatric nurse, but classic：Every man should marry. After all, happiness is not the only thing in life.Care and diligence bring luck. Quit don’t quit. Noodles don’t noodles..Empty vessels make the greatest sound.。！Remind of festial: World Housing Day .

evaluate nursing properties: why are CNAs get lesser spend evaluate to nurses?
and yet CNAs get to do more jobs like for illustration in the nursing properties? Dirty jobs I should say.

The following is the answer: (Hint: For answers, no site audit.)

Solution by Designer~Wife
Because they have Considerably significantly less instruction and education and nowhere near the responsibility.

Solution by Sarah
Simply because nursing calls for a lot far more schooling and a larger level of concept based considering rather than activity oriented pondering.

evaluate nursing properties: what is being a CNA at an Assisted residing facility like compared to a nursing house?

The following is the answer: (Hint: For answers, no site audit.)

Answer by I Reside in the True planet
at present I am a CNA at a nursing property/ assisted residing facility… And I feel the hands on perform is much less vigourous… but the “mental and emotional” operate is far more than what I’ve bargained for… The cause they need to have CNAs at assisted residing facilities is due to the fact these men and women can still do most of every thing themselves but even now need your assistance. Their well being may be declining. What I discovered is that in typical nursing households there are not as many folks who are all the way “there”… So really you just do your work and go property … but at assisted living facilities most people are “there”…. Some are demanding, some are imply, some don’t even want your assist… and to me it really is worst than a nursing home since these individuals truly kno what they are carrying out. But then I keep in mind that most of them never want to be there to started with… truly it really is all the exact same… Your helping individuals who want aid… I consider assisted residing facilities they in fact allow their residents go out on their own and also as groups and have enjoyable… Wherever as nursing households most people are so disabled that most of their activities take place proper in the facility… In assisted living facilities it’s commonly all elderly folks wherever as in nursing households it can range from teens to elders…. folks in nursing houses either are gonna be there the rest of their daily life or they are just there to be rehabilitated…. Where as assisted residing facility the individuals there really Live there… They may even have their personal apartments… you just have to do research wherever you are and compare and contrast the facilities

Solution by jannsody
Just to add to the other response, right here is a web site with a job description of a CNA for an Assisted Residing facility: nttp://sandyridgeliving.com/Documents/CNA().pdf

For standard profession information: nttp://www.bls.gov/oco and can search ‘nursing and psychiatric aides’ or such.

If you happen to be nonetheless interested in coaching, please forgo those private overly priced For-profit schools and as an alternative think about the more cost-effective community college or even county vo-tech college as extended as the program is accredited inside the industry.

U.S. colleges: nttp://www.utexas.edu/world/univ

The following are not related to the material of some compare nursing houses,But meaningful：A undesirable workman usually blames his toolsBooks and close friends ought to be number of but excellent. A single meets its destiny on the road he will take to steer clear of it..No matter the ending is ideal or not, you can’t disappear from my world.。！Remind of festial: Independence Day4/seven.
Christiana Care hosted Jonathan Blum, deputy administrator and director for the Center of Medicare at the U.S. Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), to speak about accountable care organizations on Monday, Jan. 30.

Blum is responsible for overseeing the regulation and payment of Medicare fee-for-service providers, privately-administrated Medicare health plans, and the Medicare prescription drug program. He was invited to speak at the John H. Ammon Medical Education Center by U.S. Sen. Tom Carper. Rita Landgraf, secretary of Delaware Health and Social Services, Delaware State Rep. Michael Barbieri and Bettina Riveros, Gov. Jack Markell’s policy adviser on health care, also were in attendance.

Blum also met with Christiana Care’s senior leaders for lunch and was given a tour of Christiana Hospital from the perspective of a patient with cardiac problems. Blum visited the trauma bays at the Emergency Department, followed by entry to the Heart & Vascular Interventional Services on the second floor, where cardiac catheterization would be performed.

“We wanted to show him how we would provide care for a patient during the tour, rather than simply just showing him the facilities,” said Janice Nevin, M.D., the chief medical officer for Christiana Care. “Mr. Blum was very interested in understanding what the providers are experiencing in this current environment.”

Upon completion of the tour, Blum gave an overview on accountable care organizations to about 40 Delaware health care stakeholders—comprised largely of leaders of several Delaware health systems and federally-qualified health centers.

An accountable care organization (ACO) is a type of payment and delivery reform model that links provider reimbursements to quality metrics and reductions in the total cost of care for an assigned population of patients. A group of coordinated health care providers—which can include doctors, hospitals, nursing homes—form an ACO, which then provides care to the group of patients. Thirty-two health systems have been selected by CMS to participate as pioneer accountable care organizations. Blum noted that these systems were able to qualify because they already have experience in population health, pay-for-performance and risk-based reimbursement.

“What we heard underscores the message that if we are going to be able to position ourselves for the future, we need to continue to design and experiment with projects built on the principles of an accountable care organization,” Nevin said.

tips:
The following not about elderly people,But funny：Love the neighbor. But don‘t get caughtThe tyrant dies and his rule ends, the martyr dies and his rule be-gins. (Soren Kierkegaard, Danish religious philowopher) Choose an author as you choose a friend..If we can only encounter each other rather than stay with each other, then I wish we had never encountered .。！Remind of festial: Halloween1/11.

elderly people: How do I find elderly people who want to move into my home and let me be their caregiver?
Where am I suppose to advertise this????

And how much money do I ask them for? Do the elderly people pay it or does social security?

The answer in the following: (Hint: The reader is not the correct identification.)

Answer by da25@rocketmail.com
if you have a senior citizen center try advertising there or just put an add in the papers

Answer by HappyCamper
I don’t know where you live , but here in the Mid- west you have to be certified and licenced with Uncle Sam to get paid other than from the elderly. A lady here I know takes in two at a time because she doesn’t want to be licensed any more. It was to much hassle she said. With only two you don’t need to be licensed. They live with her, she cooks, bath, feeds, and gives love and all the care they need.
You can go to a nursing home and talk to the families of the elderly or put an ad in the health section of your local paper. My friend use to get $ 1600.00 a month (more if the family could afford it ) but due to hard times she has lowered her price to accommodate the elderly more. It’s hard on her and she now has the family buy all diapers and needed things. Use to she supplied it all for them..

Answer by Me-She
I hope you have all your paperwork & permits in order. You will technically be running a home-based business & the Fire Dept will need to inspect your home for this. Your insurance rates will skyrocket (if you can get a policy for your home). You will need to register with your city & county & state board of caregivers if you are in the US. When you advertise, you’ll be overwhelmed with agencies knocking on your door & calling you to “visit” with you in your home! Sounds like you might want to start with making a call to your City Hall or Business license Office…then call zoning, health, & fire to see if your address allows you to accept renters, clients or non-blood relatives in your home for profit. You will also need a tax ID # to file as a source of where this income is coming from!

Answer by Suzie s
Go to your local Social Security Department,
they will come out and check your home for loose floor boards and torn carpets that could cause an old person to have an accident. If everything is A1 they will get you someone who needs care. You seem to be very kind with a good heart, hope everything goes your way.

Answer by Ret. Sgt.
You may have to have a number of licenses and inspections to run something out of your house. I don’t know where you live but if it is the US, you probably have to be licensed.

Then food inspection, safety, sleeping areas, all kind of other things. Your thoughts are very nice but governmental wisdom usually gets involved somewhere along the line.

You don’t have problems with being a caregiver of a relative but then you will also probably want to have medical power of attorney or fiscal power of attorney. You’ll want a lawyer on either of these set ups.

Good luck.
