Q&A: I want to read to lonely nursing home elderly people as a chartiable act – would it be allowed?
I want to do something helpful for the elderly and my idea is to visit one person on a weekly basis and read the newspaper or some periodical to them and discuss with them, as a way to give them some social interaction if they are lonely. Do you think this would be a good idea as a charitable act and would the nursing home sallow that?

The answer in the following: (Hint: The answer is not necessarily.)

i think that would be fantastic….good for you.
call a local nursing home in your area i am positive that they would love for you to visit their partrons……

Hope you kindness is returned to you 10 fold

Yes, they would love to have you – they might want to do a check on you to make sure that you are not trying to befriend someone and then steal all of their money (very common when older people make a new friend, they are very trusting) –

Are you intending on making this a part of your life, or just for a month or so until you get tired of them? So many “charities” work that way.

If you want to do this, I would recommend that you write up a little about yourself, and then ask the nursing home to help you in who might enjoy your company.

That is an excellent idea! Many of the residents cannot see well enough to read any more and still want to keep up with current events or read a book. Many of them have no visitors…ever and would love to hear a friendly voice and have someone treat them as a person that matters.
I am sure that you would be allowed to do this in almost any senior residence.

That’s downright noble of you to want to do this and lend a helping hand, but what is your question?

Answer by mdsweet1
Wonderful! If you live in MD come on over , there is a great need for those type chores. I’m sure if you check where ever you live, there will be a need for what you want. We are the neglected ones.

Good idea, you won’t get rich, but it would be rewarding and good part time. Check in you local phone book for homes near you.

Good for you–If you are going to do this make sure you have a legal waiver of liability drawn up so if you are driving Ms Daisy and she falls out of the car at the groc store you are not sued until the cows come home. Welfare hires people to do this for them. Craig’s list also offers this type of position under medical positions. Good Luck.

ps22chorus.blogspot.com If this video doesn’t make you fall in love with the PS22 Chorus, then you are obviously from a race of aliens from outerspace who have nothing resembling a human heart! Songs are “This Christmas” by Donnie Hathoway, “Wintersong” by Sarah McLachlan, “Jingle Bells” (Traditional), Rudolph The Red Nose Reindeer , & “Ave Maria” sung here by Shauna, one of the employees at the senior home, and gets an unexpected hug from Bruce when she finishes! But hands down, the best part of the video is watching the kids interact with the seniors. Such amazing kids, and it’s obvious here what’s behind the beautiful sound they make when they sing….

Why don’t you call a nursing home where you live and ask them that question? They will be more than happy to answer your question. I would also expect a welcome mat.

Yes. I worked in a Nursing Home and we had people come over to interact with the residents. The residents were absolutely thrilled to have someone who took the time to talk with them and give them company. Some of them would bring their pets or play cards and so on. Go to a Nursing Home and talk with the director or administrator.

great idea. Ask about their “wards of the state”. They have no family hence wards of the state. I recently began visiting a nursing home where I live. The first one I tried to visit told me I needed to see their social worker. The next one I went to the door was wide open and there was no need for me to see a social worker and I was able to visit that very day. Sometimes I read scriptures with them but mostly I just listen. They have such intresting lives they have lived and are so excited to have someone just sit and listen to them. So rewarding now to go there and see their faces light up when they see me! Funny I went to give of myself and found they have given me so much more than I ever expected!
    Have fun :)

You would probably be swamped with requests to do more of the same.

I’m going to buy another home. When that happens I will need someone to do repairs, care for the yard, etc. in exchange for a room.

  9. Minerva says:

There are lots of home care agencies around here. You should check the yellow pages and the local papers. Try the senior center or community hall, or even the hospital.

That’s very good of you, check with the local churches, they usually know who is in need of help.
